Well, I am a fan of question threads on twitter, gist threads, advice threads, picture threads e.t.c. Question threads because it makes me know myself better even if I don’t answer on the TL. Anyways, one day I decided to do a work related thread; a survey on some key work issues that may be overlooked, under rated or maybe I am the one taking it so highly and of great importance. I will share the important questions, the poll and my opinion. You can share yours too..

MISSION AND VISION STATEMENT

I graduated from a University that has a mission and vision statement and I can clearly remember how the Chancellor would stress that as a guide for us. He often used it to explain the rules and the management actions.

Out of 100%, it is sad that 30% did not really know about the statements of their offices. Yeah I know it is possible that some people that voted are working in the same office but let us address the issue. I still feel that no matter how small a firm is, there should be a vision, where we are going and a mission, how to get there.

And not just that, everyone on that journey, the employees, should also know how their individual jobs contribute to the attainment of these…

KPI — key Performance Indicators

It is not possible to have a job without having a KPI. Truth is the only difference is that you were not clearly told what you would be appraised with. We all get appraised by our superiors and they know what they use to rate us whether we like it or not.

A firm should clearly have a mechanism to ensure that employees know what their performance indicators are . Attaining these should also attract rewards not necessarily money.

My Final project in School was on Responsibility Accounting in companies and I came across the Goal Setting Theory by Edwin Locke(1960).

Here, he found that clear and specific goals could lead to greater output and task performance.

I also went through a lot of research articles that stressed this:

  1. Easy Kpis would make a worker less motivated especially when there is no reward attached to it.
  2. Difficult and unattainable Kpis also makes a worker less motivated because he/she knows they can never reach the rewards hanging on the very high tree of tasks.
  3. The rewards should not be begged for by the workers especially when they have completed tasks given. They should be given at the right time.

DATING AT WORK

Very dicey topic.

I do not have much to say. Let’s check the polls.

Love finds a way in almost every situation. Must not be love though, some companies are against co-workers being involved sexually but then, whatever policies a company has put in place should be followed or full disclosures should be made. (very difficult stuff sha), looking at the polls, majority were not against it, LOL.

JOB SECURITY

Though external factors that can not be controlled by the firm can lead to downsizing, I am focused on internal issues. An employee should not be tortured. It is not healthy to have someone unsure about if he/she will still have their jobs the next day by reason of the emotions of the employer or other managers. It will be good to acknowledge that no matter how little someone is earning, they still value it and plan it. Asides that, it would lead to less motivated staff because oh well obviously why put in so much when you may be laid off tomorrow.

Humans should not be treated as inventory, if it is a contract job with a deadline the workers should know and also be aware of the termination dates.

On a whole different note, I love Power series and season 4 is on fire!!
